Supporting Strong Bones for a Healthier Future

Osteoporosis Screening at Flagstone Family Practice

Healthy bones are essential for maintaining your independence and quality of life as you age. Osteoporosis is a common condition that gradually weakens bones, increasing the risk of fractures from minor falls or everyday activities. Because bone loss often occurs without symptoms, many people are unaware they have osteoporosis until a fracture occurs.

At Flagstone Family Practice, our experienced GPs provide comprehensive osteoporosis screening, risk assessment, and personalised management plans to help identify bone loss early and reduce your risk of fractures.

Who Should Consider Osteoporosis Screening?

You may benefit from osteoporosis screening if you:

  • Are aged 50 years or older

  • Are a postmenopausal woman or a man over 70

  • Have a family history of osteoporosis or hip fractures

  • Have experienced a low-impact or fragility fracture

  • Take long-term corticosteroid (steroid) medications

  • Have medical conditions that affect bone strength or calcium absorption

  • Have other risk factors such as low body weight or smoking

How We Assess Bone Health

Our GPs use evidence-based screening tools to evaluate your bone health and fracture risk.

Assessment may include:

  • Bone Mineral Density (DEXA) Scan – Measures bone strength and helps diagnose osteoporosis.

  • FRAX® Fracture Risk Assessment – Estimates your risk of fractures over the next 10 years.

  • Garvan Fracture Risk Calculator – Australian tool that predicts future fracture risk.

  • OSTA (Osteoporosis Self-Assessment Tool) – A simple screening tool that may be used for eligible patients.

  • Medical History & Risk Assessment – Reviewing lifestyle, medications, and medical conditions that may affect bone health.

Personalised Bone Health Management

If screening identifies reduced bone density or increased fracture risk, we'll develop a personalised management plan tailored to your needs.

Our services include:

  • Early detection and ongoing monitoring

  • Personalised treatment plans

  • Nutrition advice, including calcium and vitamin D guidance

  • Exercise recommendations to improve bone strength and balance

  • Medication management where appropriate

  • Lifestyle advice to reduce fracture risk

  • Regular follow-up appointments to monitor your bone health

Protect Your Bone Health

Early osteoporosis screening can help identify risks before fractures occur, allowing you to take proactive steps to protect your health and maintain your independence.
